The Systemic Impact of Unconscious Bias

Speaker: Mary Farmer, MBA, PhD (IP)

"We don't see things as they are. We see things as WE are". Anais Nin

By now we have all heard of unconscious, or implicit, bias. We see what we believe. We all have preferences for, or biases against, people, environments and experiences and these responses are triggered automatically and are largely unconscious.

Understanding the concept does not help to address it, and it also does not allow us to gain insight into the systems that are created over time by automatic preferences for, or biases against, certain types of people in organizations.

This workshop will focus on systemic, largely unconscious barriers to inclusion in organizations and in particular how they are affecting women's career paths and negatively impacting gender balance goals.

Participants will get insight into one’s own preferences and biases, what they are, how they are formed and kept in place ; how to have the ‘unconscious bias’ discussion with corporate or other coaching clients ; how to mentor and sponsor fellow coaches in observing and addressing their own biases ; further literature on the topic.
