Maria was Head of Coaching and Mentoring for Barclays in Africa, where she was instrumental in creating a coaching culture. Before the position of Head of Coaching and Mentoring was created, coaching was being undertaken on an ad hoc basis across the 14 businesses that made up Barclays Africa, with no consistent approach, no ROI measures in place and no minimum coaching standards in place. Some coaches were unqualified, and some coaching relationships lasted many years.
Maria was then appointed as Head of Coaching and Mentoring for Barclays Africa. She put in place a panel of external coaches, the necessary processes and established minimum standards.
The result: coaching began to be perceived as a key tool for developing talent, and offered in conjunction with talent development programmes. The high quality of coaches making up the coach panel ensured excellent results in terms of achievement of coaching objectives. ROI measures were put in place and achieved, and over 300 coaching programmes were overseen.
Currently, as co-director of the Centre for Coaching Switzerland, she spearheads coaching and leadership development programmes at blue-chip companies, working on their strategic, leadership and relationship challenges. Her clients span a wide range of countries and industries.
