Rising to the challenge of coaching for innovation
Maureen Steele & Cristina Bianchi
How can professional coaches support clients when they and their organisations are facing the challenge of being more innovative? First of all, you can start by accepting that innovation is accessible for everyone and not something that sits apart from everyday business. Secondly, you can become a catalyst for your coachee and their organisation by encouraging them to appreciate that using coaching skills in their everyday interactions opens the door to creativity and fosters the kind of bigger thinking that is essential for innovation. Finally, as the client must be coached to acquire a specific skill set, you will need to be ready to be more than a coach and be directive at times, consciously wearing different hats - mentor, trainer, facilitator - according to your client’s individual circumstances.
- Check out your own assumptions and beliefs about what innovation is and how it happens, and Identify and challenge any barriers to creativity and innovation you might have.
- Explore a 4-Step Road Map as a basis for tailoring your own coaching programme to support your client’s aspirations around innovation.
- Support your client in understanding the role that powerful questions have to play at every step of the innovation process.
