International Coach Federation Switzerland

28-03-2017 - Chapter meeting Suisse Romande

Freedom, Focus, Intention: Action

Speaker: James Spencer

Coming from the standpoint of an actor/presentation coach, James Spencer often finds that clients could benefit from greater physical self-awareness (posture, gesture, breath management). Also, much of the current writing around leadership and management lacks a physical component, or only cursorily addresses physical aspects of presentation and communication. So, the purpose of this presentation is to offer coaches playful and focused exercises as options for motivating clients to articulate goals and make changes, by tapping into their creativity and their hunger for self-expression. Coaches who do not have a performance or movement background will find new approaches to consider.

James Spencer will lead the audience through this theatre-based workshop, introducing acting exercises which concentrate on non-verbal communication. Through ensemble building and trust exercises, sensory exercises, improvisation and role play, he will introduce the audience to new tools for expressing intentions and formulating tactics in pursuing goals.

Objectives

  • Introduce new approaches, in the form of non-verbal communication exercises
  • Demonstrate options for motivating clients to articulate goals and make changes
  • Learn to effectively tap into the client’s creativity and hunger for self-expression

Biography

20 years ago I began my acting career doing improv in Chicago. Soon, thereafter, I earned my MFA in acting from the Institute for Advanced Theatre Training at Harvard/Moscow Art Theatre School. After performing professionally and teaching at the university level in the Boston area for 10 years, I relocated to Switzerland with my family. During the summers of 2013 & 2014, I became certified as a voice coach in Fitzmaurice Voicework®
Currently, I teach acting, coach presentations and accent modification, and teach in the personal development module of the EMBA program, HEC UNIL. May 2017 will mark the premiere of Theatre What If…? , a new Lausanne-based, English language theatre company, that I am starting with Geoffrey Dyson, of the Pulloff Theatre.
